This passage below, and the ones that follow, mirror a striking similarity to the prevalent attitude of today, that dictates whether one is "worthy" or in "good standing" with the culture, and society. Often social status or education can be the primary measuring lines as to whether or not you have any "credibility" in the eyes of those who feel more empowered or knowledgable. Yet, as we will see, God chooses the foolish and weak things of the world to shame the worldly wise, and to display His Power.
Ironically, when you look at the individuals Jesus chose, you see simple fishermen, and women who wanted to follow Him (common folk) who we're empowered because of WHO they were identified with; not with what they had or did not have - according to the standards of the world.
So, what gave these "insignificant" individuals any real credibility? It was the "Presence" of Jesus they carried in them and through them that impacted and changed lives around them. All the knowledge, prestige, and social status in the world cannot supernaturally change one's heart; there is no substitute to spending time with Jesus. He is the One who has called us, and commissioned us (to whatever vocation He gives us ) not the world.
God desires to be known, and made known - through a genuine life changing experience; and that is from "being with Him". This is the ultimate call of the Christian, whether we are of high or low "status" and THIS is why we are on earth.
"Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they wondered; and recognized that they had BEEN WITH JESUS.
But seeing the man that had been healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition"
Acts 4:13-14 [Caps mine]
"For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth; but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong, God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God."
